Crochet tops will forever be a signature summer trend, but this season has seen their popularity skyrocket thanks to an influx of crochet pieces on the SS22 catwalks. While it was crochet midi dresses in vibrant patterns for the likes of Fendi and Gabriela Hearst, we’re seeing everything from woven bags and shoes to skirts and shorts with a homespun feel. But, undoubtedly the easiest way to wear the trend is with an on-trend crochet top.
This textiles trend has been around since the Victorian era, but it really came into its own in the ‘60s and ‘70s, which saw chunky knitted tops teamed with flares, floral dresses and colour block minis. Fast-forward to the present and we’re seeing a revival of retro cuts like the handkerchief and the halter, as well as knitted tank tops and waistcoats layered over shirts and blouses for a more modern look that will fit right in to our autumn/winter 2022 capsule wardrobes.
While we’re embracing this retro trend, today’s crochet tops offer up some new takes on classic styles, with eye-catching patterns from & Other Stories, boxy cuts from Warehouse, design flourishes like ruffles from Next and ’60s-style flared sleeves at Monki.
