The 5 key denim staples to shop now, from Red’s fashion director

Denim went from a wardrobe support act to the star of the style show in recent months.

After debuting on the catwalk at Burberry and Maison Margiela’s spring/summer ‘23 collection, we’ve spotted denim skirts iterations all over the high street. While barrel-leg jeans have quickly become the new flattering silhouette we’re coveting for the new season.

If you’re looking to invest in a few key denim pieces to upgrade your capsule wardrobe for 2023, then Red fashion director Oonagh Brennan has you covered. Plus, she also has plenty of tips on how to style them for an elevated or casual look.

From the statement skirt that is perfect for any occasion to the darker jeans that will make you feel instantly pulled together, watch Oonagh style her hero pieces in the video above and shop her top picks below.

1) The barrel-leg jeans

A twist on the straight leg style, barrel jeans sit high on the waist and have an exaggerated wide-cut silhouette that falls right at the ankle for a flattering fit. Perfect for a day-to-nigh look, Oonagh picked a pair from Whistles as her favourite this season, she says: “I love them. They’re great for the evening. They’re a smarter, darker wash.”

She styled them with a chic white satin puff sleeve blouse from By Malina, which you can also wear as a jacket for an elevated look. “It’s got an amazing lower back and it just feels really opulent for evening,” Oonagh added.

For extra style points, Oonagh recommends adding a pair of sparkly hoops and pointed heels .

2) The maxi denim skirt

Consider swapping your go-to denim piece for this season’s denim maxi skirt, which offers all the comfort of your favourite pair of jeans, while still feeling put-together and elegant.

Oonagh’s says: “I’m really loving these mega maxi skirts that are around at the moment. And this one is by Raey from Matches Fashion and it’s my favourite. It’s fantastic. It’s super long on me, but I love that look.”

Bad memories of double denim, be gone. Oonagh’s standout look, complete with gold little hoops and standout platforms from Russell & Bromley, is low-key elegance from head to toe.

She says, “I love a pair of seventies flares, and these are from ME+EM. I love the pale wash and they’re great because they do them in different leg lengths, short and regular. I’m wearing it double denimed up with a matching ruffled shirt from H&M, which creates a low-key off-duty weekend look.”
