Milan Fashion Week street style often marks the turn from winter to spring as moderate temperatures leave showgoers with the opportunity to finally wear those sought-after spring runway pieces and spring-ready fashion on the streets. One theme among them: head-to-toe looks in gray, perhaps inspired by one of the city’s most key designers on the calendar, Miuccia Prada. Gray is undoubtedly one of the signature shades when it comes to knitwear and tailoring at both Prada and Miu Miu. Over the weekend at Prada, the show opened with one of its classic charcoal crew-neck sweaters paired with a white ankle-skimming skirt.
It’s also worth mentioning tonal styling in gray has shown up on the runways for fall 2023, debuting now at Bottega Veneta, Fendi, and, yes, Prada. There’s certainly a correlation between what we see in street style and the collections. Inspiration goes both ways, so it’s no surprise we see commonalities between the two. However, it wasn’t only Prada show attendees sporting the minimalist shade. Everyone from editors to supermodels selected gray as their spring color of choice, from gray suiting to skirt sets; shop all of the looks here.
A structured tweedy gray blazer pairs well with a bluish slate-colored trouser and gets the supermodel stamp, thanks to Gigi Hadid.
Going from day to night? Saks’s SVP, fashion director, Roopal Patel, suggests a silver sequined skirt with a basic gray T-shirt to keep things simple. A white pump adds a professional touch to daytime wear, while a heeled sandal brings the look into the night.
In quintessential minimalist style, you can’t go wrong with tonal dressing via an oversized suit in any shade of gray.
A striking mustard or bright yellow accessory or layering piece is one way to break up gray on gray; consider adding a pop of an unexpectedly cool color for spring.
A heather gray knit top and skirt combination (as seen here on Nordstrom’s women’s designer fashion & editorial director Rickie De Sole) is a winning transitional outfit formula and are the sort of versatile seasonless items you’ll find yourself wearing on repeat.
Smokey Sweater Dressing
Outside of Prada’s Fall Winter 2023 show, the spring collection’s newest pieces were on display on the bodies of show guests, like a slit skirt and sweater combination.
